KOOOKAMS

Koookams is an Iranian band that started as street performers. They are sharing stories of oppression, silent suffering and happiness of Iranians in their songs. Koookams is more than just sharing and singing — their music gives voice to experiences listeners deeply relate to, especially those who struggle to express their own stories. Their songwriting, advocacy, and empathy set them apart in a music industry crowded with trend-driven imitation. They blend fresh eastern influences with traditional and modern Iranian sounds, creating a bridge between Iranian and Western music.

Role

Art Director & Brand Designer

Familiar, Yet Undefined

Making music in Iran comes with a great number of constraints from the government. Iranians have to filter themselves in order to release their art for the public. Koookams was a familiar and respected name, a presence felt throughout the community. However, for all their recognition, they still hadn't found a unique voice or a clear brand—a necessary ingredient to truly elevate their status and stand out in the crowded music market.

A Musical Vessel

Koookams is a musical vessel designed to resonate with people's stories, making them feel heard and powerful. It encapsulates those nostalgic, emotional moments—where you might be dancing one moment and shedding tears the next. Ultimately, Koookams aims to ensure representation and connection through shared musical experiences.

SOUND OF UNTOLD STORIES

Koookams rebels against oppression, untold stories, and repetitive modern music. Their identity features bold, rule-breaking Farsi and English serif typography (سرکش). This foundation supports expressive elements like icons and illustrations. Koookams' activist spirit is highlighted by strong Farsi serifs (سرکش), which resemble the extended "arm" of the English K.

OUTCOME

This project helped the band express their identity with clarity and confidence, giving their music a visual language that resonated deeply with their audience and story. For me, it was a chance to merge branding with my love for music and storytelling, and to use design as a way to support artists in sharing their message more powerfully.

REFLECTION

Working on Koookams helped me understand how much I enjoy building identities that feel human — identities with personality, movement, and emotion. Designing for a band challenged me to think beyond traditional brand rules and let sound, rhythm, and storytelling guide my decisions. If I revisit this project, I’d explore even more experimental motion and interactive elements to bring their music closer to the visual world.
